Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder has historically been notoriously difficult to treat. We now know that the best treatments for OCD combine use of medication (primarily SSRI anti-depressants) and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. The therapy component involves exposure to the objectionable stimulus and thought, practicing distraction and relaxation techniques, postponement of and/or practicing of compulsive behaviors and other, sometimes paradoxical interventions.
Treatment of phobias and other anxiety disorders is also most effectively provided through a combination of medication and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy as outlined for the treatment of OCD.
